The Event Center for Port of Anacortes replaces an existing one in a different location, no longer safe for public use. The Port wanted the new project at the Cap Sante Marina to develop a greater sense of community by creating a connection between downtown and the waterfront. Site selection was pivotal in meeting this goal by locating it at the confluence of five major and minor roads, providing visibility both from downtown and the waterfront.
Besides hosting both public and private events, the project was designed to accommodate commercial, retail, and office spaces. Retail suites are located streetside to attract the public eye and enliven the façade, while the upper floor was designed for office suites, including new administrative offices for the growing Port of Anacortes staff.
The architecture pays homage to the historic working waterfront—gabled roof forms, exposed timber elements, wood and metal detailing, and exposed concrete floors recall a bygone era. An upper deck level with large glass doors located on the ground floor provides an easy transition from the indoors to the outdoors so that people can take in the gorgeous surroundings. The building’s orientation maximized the opportunity for solar roof panels, included in the design.
